What's the difference between noise and grain? And can noise and/or grain be considered desirable? I've wondered this for what feels to be a long time. In the editing of this image, I set out to find the truth in noise and grain for myself. And based upon the research I gathered, I came to the conclusion that noise and grain are basically and intrinsically THE SAME THING. :? (Confused) Yes, you heard me right: THE SAME THING. The only difference is that it's called "noise" when it's undesirable and called "grain" when it is desirable. I may or may not agree with this, but nonetheless it was a very helpful revelation for me. You see, I've always been one of those people that obsessively tries to get rid of "noise." Yet I'd vaguely heard from somewhere before that "grain" can be considered desirable. And as far as I knew then, grain was very similar to or is equivalent to noise. So what's the real difference?! There's such a big focus on getting rid of "noise," and now all of a sudden it's desirable?! Yep, you could say I was confused. But now I know. Phew! And I am glad. Oh what a relief it is to know the difference between noise and grain! What a relief it is to know that they are THE SAME THING! Except noise is undesirable and grain is desirable. I felt so much better. Sweating a little... And yet I don't quite see how grain can add anything more than unwanted particles to photos. Oh well, I don't quite care that much... I'm just glad that I don't have to worry so much about getting rid of noise. :) (Smile)

Now back to this image: you've probably guessed already that the noise vs. grain debate involves the image I'm submitting now. Post Above Well, yes it does. There is "grain" in this image. Before I had come to this final version of the image, I had done my typical noise reduction "procedure," if you will. But there's a lot of editing in this image. Enough that applying the edits turned the original "noiselessness" of my image up close into "paint-by-numbers" lines up close. And that bugged me. That bugged me so much. :woo: recolour I'm a perfectionist. However, there probably was a time when the paint-by-numbers lines wouldn't have bothered me that much. But now, I've been pushed back into that perfectionist persona. I'm probably more of a perfectionist now than I ever was... And with that in mind, I COULD NOT STAND to have the noise OR the paint-by-numbers lines. I was in a dilemma. Then I remembered a vague voice whispering to me Whisper sweet nothings in my ear! "But grain can be desirable." I didn't know what that meant... So that's when I went on my "journey" Post Above to find out just what noise and/or grain really is. And I'm glad I did. This image has noise, and I don't have to worry about it. :happybounce:

Even if I did agree with the assumption that noise can sometimes add something more to certain photos, does the "grain" in this image Post Above add anything to this particular photo? I don't think I can say. But I bet you can. What do you think? :please:
