Accentuate

Description

In case you're wondering, there is a reason why I decided to call this "Accentuate." If dA was like YouTube, and subscribers/watchers were in tune with their subscribees'/friends' comments, you'd know that 'accentuate' is a favorite word of mine when describing others' artwork. It really is a neat word. It has a nice ring to it.

Anyway, I took several photos of these plants, whatever they are, but I liked the black and white photos better. I figured out why: most of the plants are really sharp, right? And the background is blurry. You can see this in color photos, but for some reason, when it's in black and white, it just accentuates (hint, hint) the contrast between the plants and the blurry background. Because it's a black and white photo, you're not focusing on the colors, you're focusing on the content of the actual photograph. I think this is why black and white photographs are very... mystifying. Is that a good word? And, in a way, with the addition of color photos in the art world, the demand for higher-quality black and white photos has gone up. People are so used to seeing these overwhelming color photos that they want to take a break and go back to the basics, i.e. black and white. That's one way to think about it, but another way is to think that people are so used to these great color photos that that, in turn, has upped their expectations for black and white photography. Oh well, either way, black and white photography is not out of style yet. In fact, it's not even close.

Thank goodness for that.
